Investing in the health workforce is key to meet the future needs of populations, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Through this exploratory policy tracing study we mapped and analysed investments by bilateral, multilateral and other development actors in human resources for health actions, programmes and health jobs more broadly since 2016.
Co-authors Remco van de Pas, Myria Koutsoumpa and I conclude that there is still an urgent need to take shared responsibility for cooperative action for overcoming and addressing persistent under-investment in the health workforce. We provide policy recommendations for international health workforce investments by development actors.
